The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia has issued a public consultation paper titled “Revamp of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Content Code”, proposing a number of changes to the prohibitions, restrictions and requirements on electronic content, particularly in relation to advertising, as well as broader implications for online service providers and online marketplace operators. The closing date for submission of feedback to the Content Forum is 10 December 2021.

Effective 1 January 2022, cloud service providers in Malaysia will be subjected to licensing requirements under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Technical standards are also expected to be implemented in due course to ensure that licensed cloud service providers comply with prescribed requirements as to data security and data protection. Cloud service providers are advised to carefully consider whether the new licensing regime applies to their solutions, and to ensure they are duly licensed when the requirements come into force in the new year.

On 3 June 2021, the Trade Remedy Authority of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) received a petition for an anti-dumping investigation with regard to office desks and chairs originating from China and Malaysia. The petitioners are Xuan Hoa Vietnam JSC, and Hoa Phat Furniture., JSC. On 1 September 2021, the MOIT issued Decision No. 2091/QD-BCT to officially conduct the investigation.

On 3 June 2021, the Trade Remedy Authority (TRA) of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) – the investigator – received a petition for an anti-dumping investigation (AD) with regard to office desks, chairs and their parts originating from the People’s Republic of China (China) and Malaysia. On 18 June 2021, the TRA confirmed that the submitted petition dossier is complete and legal.

Earlier this year, there were reports of the inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB) initiating probes and audits against a number of SVDP participants in relation to the periods for which the voluntary disclosures were made. The previous government administration had introduced the SVDP1 to encourage taxpayers to come forward to disclose their previously misreported income and deductions.
