In brief

The CIPD and Equality and Human Rights Commission EHRC have produced guidance for employers on how to manage and support employees experiencing domestic abuse. The aim is to encourage employers to take an active supporting role to employees experiencing domestic abuse and the guidance sets out some practical recommendations on how to achieve this. A copy of the guidance can be found here.

The guidance recommends that employers implement a clear policy in place on supporting employees experiencing domestic abuse as well as a four step effective framework of support where employers (i) recognise the problem, (ii) respond appropriately to disclosure, (iii) provide support and (iv) refer to appropriate help.

As previously reported, earlier this year, the government conducted a review into how domestic abuse survivors could be better supported in the workplace. The government’s response to the review is expected at the end of this year.
